How to use the Danish course

( på dansk)

Frequently-asked questions

  • How do I subscribe to your course?
It is not a subscription. You simply buy the course, and I send you a zip file to download. Speakdanish is not a language school, either.
  • What does it cost?
It costs 129 Euros. Here is the price in USD, GBP, AUD. To see the price in any other currency, go to xe.com.
  • Why don't all the links work?
What you see on this site is just a 40-page preview of the full course, so most of the links have been disabled. The full course contains over 340 pages of learning material and over 5,000 audio-enabled Danish words and phrases.
  • How long will I be able to use the course? When does it expire?
It is yours to use forever. You download it onto your computer, and it stays there for as long as you want.
  • How do I install the program?
Strictly speaking it is not a program, so it is not installed. It is just a number of web pages that you copy somewhere onto your computer. Just open the "start" file in the speakdanish folder that you downloaded.
  • Can I use it on my other computer?
Yes. You can use it on all your computers, as long as it is for private use.
  • What are the minimum system requirements?
The course should work fine on any computer under 10 years old.
  • I work at Acme Camping Site, and many of our guests are Danish. I thought that maybe it would be a good idea for me to learn some Danish. Should I buy this course?
Yes. Yes, you should. (Sorry if you found that strange, but I often get actual questions like this).
  • Is it compatible with Mac?
Yes. It is just a website that runs from your hard drive, so it will work with any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) It looks exactly as it does here.
  • I'm using a Mac, and I get a "Decompression failed" message when I try to open the zip file.
Download and install The Unarchiver. This will let you uncompress the speakdanish zip file. You can also try BetterZip. If it still doesn't work, download the zip file again.
  • Is it compatible with iPad and iPhone?
No. The iPad and iPhone don't support Flash, and all the Danish sounds were made using Flash.
  • What do I do if something happens to my computer and I lose the course?
I'll send you the download details again -- but before that happens, remember to back up.
  • I often get the following message, asking me to get a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. What should I do?

Try to reload the page (press F5).

If that doesn't work, and you're using Internet Explorer, disable ActiveX Filtering:

  • I've paid for the course. Now what?
You will receive a link and password from me within 24 hours that will enable you to download the course. The downloaded folder contains files that look exactly like this website, except that all the links and sounds are enabled. You put it somewhere on your computer, and it runs from there. There is no need to be online after you've downloaded it.
  • My internet connection is too slow, and the file is too big for me to download. What do I do?
Let me know. I'll send you a CD. It doesn't cost extra. Note that the CD contains the Danish course as it is presented here; it is not an audio CD with Danish sentences that you can listen to while driving to work.
  • Here's a link to my website. Please put it on your site and I'll link to yours.
Sorry, I don't do link exchanges.
  • How long will it take to complete the course?
It is a self-study program, so you can learn at your own pace. The course contains enough material to keep you learning long after you've mastered the language (because you'll always find something new).
  • What level will I have attained at the end of the course?
The short answer: Upper intermediate. The long answer: The concept of language levels is arbitrary and artificial. You already have a language of your own, and you are used to expressing complex ideas. It is unfair to have to wait until “Level 10” before you can order lunch in Danish. With this course you learn “real Danish” from the beginning, with a minimal amount of spoonfeeding.
While you might not be able to read Kierkegaard quite yet (unless you are familiar with his work), you should have a good verbal competence after just a few months.
  • How long before I am fluent?
The true measure of your progress lies in your ability to interact with native speakers. If you live in Denmark you will be able to express yourself reasonably well in Danish within a year, even if you consider yourself a “bad learner”. Because fluency depends much on how confident you are with your pronunciation, combined with an abundant cache of vocabulary, this course should give you an excellent advantage.
